Chapter 12

“You bastard! You could have killed her!”

“I thought she knew it was a joke.”

“Get out of here. If Gideon finds out what you did, he may kill you.”

“But—”

“NOW!”

Jordan lifted a heavy hand to cover her ears and felt something wet. She opened her eyes and blinked several times before she focused on Phyllidia’s face. She was under the shade of a lone tree on the beach and Knight licked her face. Phyllidia’s face was pale and her eyes were wild. Jordan blinked again and saw that Phyllidia’s clothes were splattered with blood.

“What happened?” Jordan asked woozily.

“You pushed the ocean back!” Phyllidia shouted.

Jordan wiped a hand over her nose and stared at her bloody hands without comprehension. “I did it wrong?”

“No, what you did isn’t possible!” Phyllidia stomped her feet in the sand and paced. “I came back to the beach when you lifted your hands. If I knew what you were going to do—I wouldn’t have believed it if I didn’t see it with my own eyes! You literally shoved the water back thirty feet.”

Phyllidia’s voice was so high it hurt Jordan’s ears. She pushed Knight away and took inventory of her body. She felt sick, but her power was completely gone. She looked deeper. Not a peep from William. Jordan nodded with satisfaction and swayed as she got to her feet. She staggered towards the water to wash off the blood leaking from her nose and ears, but stopped when she saw how far out the waves were. Shells, rocks covered in seaweed, fish and other sea life were now exposed.

“Polly told you to do it because he didn’t expect you to succeed. He wanted to show you it’s not possible to—”

“What happened?”

For a second, she thought it was Mr. Parker talking from the shade until Gideon stepped into the sunlight with eyes that burned an unnatural turquoise.

Phyllidia rushed forward with her hands outstretched. “She’s alright, Gideon.”

There was a roaring sound behind her and Jordan turned. A waterspout rose out of nowhere, a whirling tornado of water that funneled towards the sky. The sea thrashed as it moved towards the sandy beach. Jordan took several steps back when the waves rushed towards her. Gideon stepped in front of her and held up a hand. The waves froze in a writhing, seething wall of water over ten feet high before it fell gently to the sand. Gideon turned and she saw that his eyes hadn’t returned to their natural black.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

She nodded and he led her to the water so she could wash her face. She eyed the waterspout, which swayed from side to side.

“I didn’t mean to bother you,” Jordan said when she finished washing away the blood.

“I’ll always make time.”

His voice was stifled and she looked up at him.

“I really am fine,” she said.

“You could have—” His voice faltered and the waterspout swelled.

“But I didn’t,” Jordan finished. “I don’t want to take up your time. I just need to talk to someone.”

“Do you have a Tolly?” Gideon barked.
